Five Squash Rallies That Make You Go “You Gotta be Kidding Me!”

We all know that professional squash players play the game at a different level. The combination of agility, aggressiveness, anticipation, and speed makes the game a pleasure to watch.

Squash rallies never seem to end as players hit nicks, retrieve kill shots, lob, drop, re-drop, and re-re-drop. The game clearly is being played more in the forecourt than off the back wall. Hard shots are good, but the touch is better. Accuracy is paramount whether it is a drop, drive, or clearing lob.

And then, there is the fake!

As the difference in the level of skill sets among top players gets minimal, key points are won and lost with the surprise element of a fake or deception.

Here are five squash rallies, the likes of which you are unlikely to see at your local club. Since the videos are embedded from YouTube, you may have to bear with the advertisements that precede the video clips.

Double fake shot

You may have seen some players fake before they hit a kill shot, but how about a double fake?

The video below is a recent addition after this post has been up for nearly five years. A triple fake, by James Wilstrop, deserves a place in this post.

Backhand topspin drop by David Palmer

It is hard enough to hit a tight drop with the right touch to avoid the ball sitting up; then, how do you hit a topspin drop on the backhand?

I would classify this under the “do not try this at your local squash club” category!

This last video is not about a squash rally. It shows the amount of precision and control players like Ramy Ashour have.
