What Would You Do In These Situations?

Over the past few days, I came across some news items that made me wonder what I would have done if I were in those situations. Here are three that would make you ponder…

If your plane crash-landed, and you managed to climb out safely, would you stop to take a picture and post it to social media?

David Eun - Tweet from SFO Crash

My immediate reaction is to say “no.” My survival instincts would be to put as much distance between the burning wreckage and me, in a hurry. David Eun, Harvard-educated Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics did what most of us may not do. He was one of the first survivors of the accident to communicate to the outside world that most of the passengers had survived the mishap. Here is a snapshot of his tweet sent out minutes after the crash.

Would you tattoo your company’s brand name on your body for a fifteen percent pay raise?

Body leasing is not new. Like cars being pimped up with company logos, some brave individuals have, in the past, signed up to display company logos tattooed on their bodies. However, employers offering a pay increase, as an incentive for having brand names on employees’ bodies, is new. Here is an example from Rapid Realty of New York City.

If your news editor handed you the following names of the pilots of Asiana flight 214 that crashed at SFO, would you go on air with it?

Pilots’ names: Captain Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, and Bang Ding Ow.

TVU Channel 2 - Asiana Pilots' Names Gaffe

It appears the folks at California-based KTVU Channel 2 were not thinking when they aired the “names” of the South Korean pilots of the plane that was involved in the crash.

In their eagerness to scoop news, are media outlets compromising the integrity of the information without the appropriate validation? I agree that we are living in a world of unfiltered news sources, and content overload is the order of the day. But, Ho Lee Fuk? Even I would have hesitated on that one!
