My Athleisure Awakening – Are Suits Truly Obsolete?

Athleisure awakening

It’s been ages since I last wore a suit—a wedding reception two years ago, and a somber funeral before that. Staring at those expensive suits hanging untouched in my closet, I can’t help but wonder if they’ll ever see the light of day again. They feel like relics of a bygone era. My daily reality now is vastly different: I’ve embraced the comfort and practicality of athleisure. It’s the perfect blend, fitting seamlessly into my relaxed and flexible lifestyle. Freed from the constraints of a traditional workplace dress code, I’ve discovered the ease and versatility of this modern clothing genre.

Remember when suits were the ultimate power move?

Suits were once symbols of corporate success, with the price often perceived as a direct measure of the wearer’s accomplishments. But times have changed! The rise of remote work, accelerated by the pandemic, has significantly altered fashion norms. Stiff suits are out, and comfortable clothing is in. People seeking effortless style, comfort, and practicality are increasingly turning to athleisure. According to recent market research, the athleisure market has seen near double-digit annual growth in the past few years, while sales of traditional business attire have declined.

Perhaps this trend was started by tech entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, and Satya Nadella, known for their casual attire. Or, maybe it’s the lingering effect of the COVID work culture, when everyone worked remotely in their most comfortable clothes. Regardless of the reasons, if you haven’t discovered athleisure, you may be missing out on a perfect blend of comfort and style.

What is “Athleisure” All About?

Simply put, it’s athletic clothing worn for leisure and day-to-day activities. This isn’t about wearing your favorite soccer jersey with jeans. Athleisure combines the essentials of sporty gear (think: stretchy, breathable, ready for action) with the coolness of everyday wear. Often referred to as technical/performance wear, it’s that magical blend where your cropped pants are just as acceptable at brunch as they are at the gym. It’s clothing that says, “I might work, or I might work out.” As streetwear, athleisure has become a popular alternative to jeans.

Athleisure offers a comprehensive selection of apparel. You’ll find everything from essential tops like t-shirts, hoodies, and sweatshirts, to a variety of bottoms including yoga pants, leggings, tech pants, joggers, and athletic shorts, not to mention supportive sports bras and other adaptable pieces.

A versatile addition to your wardrobe

Athleisure has become the new go-to for work, gym, and travel. Comfort wear does not have to be sloppy. Baggy sweatpants and tracksuits have given way to stylish tech pants and leggings that double as work and leisure wear. Whether you’re crushing it at the gym, traveling the world, or socializing with friends, you want clothes that move with you, not against you. These sweat-wicking clothes are perfect for a morning workout, a midday coffee run, or even a casual evening out.

Athleisure companies have found that niche. It’s fashionable, comfortable, versatile, and mostly affordable. Gone are the days of sacrificing comfort for style.

Not Just Clothes, a Lifestyle

Many athleisure wear companies are prioritizing sustainable sourcing and production. This focus is driving a significant shift in the industry towards more environmentally responsible materials and practices. It’s not just what we wear; it’s about how we live. For many consumers, athleisure is redefining what it means to dress “smart casual.”

The good thing is that you don’t have to be an athlete to sport athleisure clothing. With clothes that blur the lines between work and play, athleisure reflects a shift towards prioritizing wellness and balance. Sweat-wicking fabrics that keep you cool during your workout are also perfect for long flights or busy days on the go.

Usual Suspects and Niche Players

While big-name sports apparel companies like Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour have their versions of performance wear, some niche players have made their mark in this space. Brands like Lululemon, with their widely popular yoga pants, along with Athleta, Outdoor Voices, and others, have significantly shaped the women’s athleisure market. These brands often focus on high-quality materials, innovative designs, and a strong sense of community.

On the men’s side, Lululemon’s ABC, Vuori’s Cascade Tech, Rhone’s Commuter, and Public Rec’s All Day Every Day pants are just a few of the popular brands and styles. California-based Vuori, a 10-year-old company’s recent $5 billion valuation, stands testament to the growing popularity of this clothing category.

Athleisure does not have to be pricey

The minimalist designs of Uniqlo’s Dry-Ex pants retail below $50. While Lululemon, Vuori, Public Rec, and others are priced higher, they are comparable to other contemporary brands. So, ditch the old rules and embrace the new era of comfort and versatility. Upgrade your wardrobe with some key athleisure pieces and experience the freedom of dressing well without sacrificing an ounce of comfort. Athleisure has truly changed how many people dress, and for good reason.
